TEACHING & LEARNING
Personal Teaching Standard
The ideas that guide my professional practice in my educational services in teaching, workshops and coaching are drawn from research regarding what learners value in teachers (Brookfield, 2006). My personal teaching standard includes:
Credibility-I will be prepared and up to date regarding research into theory and best practices;
Expertise-I will be the the overachiever, the teacher who won't settle for anything mediocre;
Experience-I will draw from 40 years of memories, reflections that are 'left over' from experiences as a parent, international aid worker, teacher and researcher;
Conviction-I will work honestly with students and clients to find real answer to real questions, real solution to real problems and real ways to address real issues;
Rationale-I will have a real reason, a stated purpose, a rationale for what we will do in a workshops, course or program; otherwise we won't do it
Authenticity-I will be no more or less than what you see in a training event-caring, edgy and convincing;
Congruence-I will work conscientiously so that there no gaps between my words and actions-as a teacher, parent and leader;
Full disclosure-Students and clients will know what the intended outcomes are because of my 'backward design' that includes clear statements of expectations, rationale for doing what we are going to do, agendas and goals; and,
Responsiveness-I will listen carefully, attentively and with care so as to 'hear' what my students and clients are actually saying through what they are saying
